Design Philosophy
Our design philosophy is rooted in the concept of 'YI'. Embodying the multi-faceted meanings it holds in mandarin - 艺术, 簡易, 意义, we apply craft, virtue, and strive for simplicity in our solutions.
We honor time, place and communities involved in our projects by preserving the character of each site - be it a historical building or a natural landscape; to inform and guide our creative endeavors.
Through this, we navigate the delicate balance between tradition and modernity, bringing us crafted spaces that resonate deeply with their surroundings.
Design Process
At Studio of Yi, we allow our research phase to speak for itself, from receiving the brief to understanding historical context from a neutral lens. At the developmental stage, we are focused on 4 key attributes that give every project the touch of YI - unique, simple, contemporary and appealing.
We hold minimalism at the heart of our work, believing that simple functionality coupled with understated beauty creates a profound visual impact. Moreover, by embracing the notion of absence, we allow the eye to roam freely, heightening the appreciation of presence and functionality.
This intentional simplicity avoids overstimulation, inviting serenity and mindfulness into the spaces we create. Furthermore, when designing these spaces, we aim at evoking emotions from its occupants through not just the visuals but their auditory and tactile experiences too. Thus by limiting our material palatte, we ensure consistency and coherence throughout our projects, creating a harmonious dialogue between design and environment.
