The roof level at Capri Penang is reimagined as a shared social destination, comprising an event space, communal amenities, and a suite room. The design draws from Penang’s architectural heritage, in particular the rhythm and spatial character of its historic shophouses and five-foot ways.
Traditionally, five-foot ways functioned as transitional spaces—shaded, communal, and porous - blurring the boundary between public and private life. This idea of transition and layering informs the interior planning of the roof level. Circulation is treated as an experience rather than a corridor, with arched openings, filtered light, and framed views guiding movement through the space.
Materially, the interiors adopt a restrained palette of timber, light-toned surfaces, and soft curves, referencing the craftsmanship and warmth of Penang’s historic buildings while remaining contemporary in expression. Ceiling treatments and repeated arch forms create rhythm and continuity, echoing the cadence of colonnades and covered walkways.
The event space is conceived as an open, adaptable room - anchored by proportion, light, and material - allowing it to host gatherings while maintaining a calm architectural presence. Supporting spaces, including the communal toilets and suite room, continue the same language of softness, clarity, and spatial generosity.
Rather than replicating historical elements literally, the design abstracts Penang’s architectural memory into atmosphere, proportion, and movement - creating interiors that feel rooted in place while serving modern hospitality needs.
